ACSR - Aluminium Conductors Steel Reinforced
These conductors are manufactured using several wires of aluminium and galvanised steel, stranded in layers. The core of ACSR is formed of galvanised steel and the outer layer by galvanised aluminium.
Generally the configuration of these ACSR conductors is of 1,7 or 19 wires surrounded by concentric layers of aluminium wires. This variation of aluminium and steel ratios can produce a conductor for any particular application. For example if a high tensile strength is required then the number of steel wires can be increased until the required strength is reached. Vice Versa if a high current carrying capacity is required the external wires would be increased creating a higher aluminium content but obviously reducing the tensile strength.
